Masahisa Fukase's photobook Wonderful Days. Around 1964, when Fukase and his wife Yoko began living in the Matsubara housing complex in Soka, Saitama, a Siamese cat named Kabo joined their household, followed some years later by a black cat, Hebo; the book records the days the couple spent with the two cats. These are unpublished 1960s photographs made before his later, much-photographed cat Sasuke, reconstructed from the few surviving vintage prints. Alongside the intimacy of cats and people sharing one domestic world, it captures their sharp gazes and feral expressions — a distinctive distance that exceeds mere pet photography. Edited by Michitaka Ota, with text by Tomo Kosuga. Published in a limited edition of 800 by roshin books in 2015.
