A photobook Daido Moriyama published in 2012 through MATCH and Company, the third release on its new label 'MMM,' in a large format housed in a slipcase, in a limited edition of 1,200. What it collects are images Moriyama made in his own room using Impossible Project instant film, imagining a world in which photographic paper, film and developer had all been lost. In an age when the survival of silver-halide photography was in doubt, he deliberately faced the vanishing materials, taking the unexpected blotches and bleeds thrown up by chemical reaction as the work itself, and reconsidering the question 'what is photography?' from the level of matter. Unlike the familiar image of Moriyama as a man of the wandering street snapshot, it is strongly coloured by private, hermetic experiment, and its blunt, material title, white and vinegar, likewise signals an awareness of the substances that make a photograph possible. A singular volume conveying Moriyama's experimental spirit.
