Untitled Records is an ongoing series of photobooks and exhibitions that Keizo Kitajima began in 2014. The photographer who once raced through the streets in Photo Express: Tokyo here changes method entirely, using a large-format camera to make big color photographs and quietly amassing landscapes from Hokkaido to Okinawa. Underlying the project is the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and the Fukushima nuclear accident. Photographing the disaster zones of Sanriku and Fukushima, Kitajima has said he arrived at a sense that immediate reality and the overwhelming "reality of images" flooding in from nowhere can no longer be cleanly separated. Even the title—"untitled records"—reflects an era in which it has become difficult to experience the world from a single, privileged, all-surveying viewpoint. Conceived as a long-term undertaking of more than twenty volumes released at roughly four-year intervals, it records post-disaster Japan with a cool, deliberate gaze quite unlike dramatic photojournalism. It counts among the significant achievements of contemporary Japanese photography.
