This archive collection focuses on the early works of Daido Moriyama, one of postwar Japan's most prominent photographers. Based on materials from the Tokyo Polytechnic University Shadai Gallery, it features over 930 photographs ranging from his earliest surviving work in 1960 to around 1982, when "Light and Shadow" was published.
The book traces the trajectory of trial and error that would later culminate in works such as "Japan: A Photo Theater," "The Hunter," and "Farewell Photography." Through a vast array of images capturing street fragments, urban landscapes, and people, it reveals Moriyama’s ongoing confrontation with the world through photography in the years before he established his signature "are, bure, boke" (grainy, blurry, out-of-focus) style.
Offering a perspective distinct from a typical collection of masterpieces, this volume allows readers to follow the formative process of Daido Moriyama and experience the atmosphere of Japan in the 1960s and 70s.
