TOKYO NUDE 100 Rumi Ando

This monograph brings together 100 works from the "TOKYO NUDE" series by photographer and retoucher Rumi Ando. By using digital retouching to omit or adjust "visual noise"—such as windows, advertisements, and rooftop antennas—from Tokyo’s chaotic urban landscape, Ando reveals a balanced and transformed vision of the city.
After moving from her hometown in Okayama to Tokyo for university, Ando began photographing the city to overcome her sense of alienation. She later discovered the creative potential of image editing while working professionally on retouching tasks, such as removing power lines, which led her to start "TOKYO NUDE" as a personal project.
Ando’s uncanny world, positioned between reality and fiction, has garnered significant international attention. Her work was famously featured on the cover of The Tokyo Tower of Sympathy by Rie Kudan, winner of the 170th Akutagawa Prize (2024), and has been showcased across various literary and design media. This volume features all 100 works in full color, along with making-of insights and dialogues with author Rie Kudan and architect Yoshiharu Tsukamoto (co-founder of Atelier Bow-Wow). The book itself, designed by Jun Kawana, features a striking "skeleton binding" with an exposed spine and transparent PUR glue, harmonizing perfectly with the concept of the work.
