Tokyo, in Autumn Nobuyoshi Araki・Youko Araki
Pickup currently unavailable
This photobook presents conversations between Nobuyoshi Araki, one of Japan's leading photographers, and his wife Yoko, structured across facing pages. These dialogues unfolded while viewing photographs taken in Tokyo between 1972 and 1973.
Captured with a Pentax 6×7 medium format film camera mounted on a tripod, these photographs depict the old, good Tokyo streetscapes before the city transformed into the modern Tokyo of towering skyscrapers, including bustling areas like Shinjuku. The deserted urban landscapes evoke the perspective and eeriness seen in photographs taken by French photographer Eugène Atget in Paris, while also conveying a sense of melancholy over the loss of the former cityscapes in central Tokyo where the Araki couple grew up.
This book captures the early perspective of Nobuyoshi Araki, who had not yet actively incorporated sexual expression, the year after he published the groundbreaking photobook Sentimental Journey (1971), taken during his honeymoon with his wife, Yoko.
