TOKYO EAST WAVES Mitsugu Ohnishi
Pickup currently unavailable
A photobook collecting three series (the Taiyo Award-winning "Town at the River Mouth: Koto Zero-Meter Zone '84," the Ihei Kimura Award-winning "From the Peripheral Towns," and "NEWCOAST") taken by Mitsugu Ohnishi, a photographer born in Fukagawa, Tokyo, in the late 1980s and early 1990s in eastern Tokyo and its surrounding areas.
Ohnishi has reliably captured the transitions and memories of the city by carefully photographing the daily lives of people living in the Tokyo Bay coastal areas outside the 23 wards and the traces of time carved into the land.
Included in this book is a series created using a medium-format film camera "Makina 670" with a combination of color positive and color negative film, in parallel with his masterpiece "WONDERLAND" shot in monochrome. This is the first attempt to compile Ohnishi's color works, which had limited opportunities for publication for a long time, into a single photobook. At the end of the book, a text titled "'One-eyed Dog' Makina 670" by photographer and writer Ken Ohyama, who won the 2023 Photographic Society of Japan Curatorial Award, and a contribution titled "Mitsugu Ohnishi's Dancho Nikki (Diary of a Broken Heart)" by photographer Hiromi Tsuchida are included.
These two texts, which delve into the background of the works and the artist's view of photography, serve as clues to re-interpreting Ohnishi's work.
