To the Far Side of the Moon Masamitsu Magome

This is the debut photobook by Masamitsu Magome. At first glance, these images appear to chronicle private relationships and familiar surroundings; however, within them, light and shadow—as well as existence and its fluctuations—coexist with a quiet, powerful intensity. Magome uses photography as a medium to project things hidden beneath the surface of the present: invisible layers of the past, the latent heat and weight of daily life, and the tentative steps toward a future.
While many of the locations are ordinary scenes where people and architecture coexist, the artist perceives buildings as structures that both protect and enclose humanity. The windows of these buildings, while lit by the warmth of individual lives, simultaneously conceal the unique realities within.
Through his lens, Magome confronts the world by capturing the affection and the friction that arise between the body and its environment, and between the individual and the city. The pain and longing quietly reflected on these pages are foreseen to breathe across time and beyond the self. Just as the Moon and the Earth are bound by gravity, never to be parted, so too are light and shadow inseparable. This volume is an exploration of the profound elements born in that very threshold.
