Volume 4 of Iwanami Shoten's series The Japanese Photographers, devoted to Yasuzo Nojima, a leading figure of art photography from the Taisho into the early Showa era. He is known for early nudes and portraits in painterly gum and bromoil prints, and for his later turn toward the matter-of-fact "new photography"; he was also a central supporter of the magazine Koga. The volume surveys, through works and commentary, the achievement of a photographer who helped found the dawn of modern Japanese photography and who embodies the shift from pictorialism to modernism.
