Volume 33 of Iwanami Shoten's series The Japanese Photographers, devoted to Kikuji Kawada, a leading figure of postwar Japanese photography. Known for The Map, which assembles the Atomic Bomb Dome, the rising-sun flag, and the memory of war into symbolic monochrome, and later for the apocalyptic cosmology of The Last Cosmology, Kawada built a world of dense symbolism. A member of the VIVO collective, his work is surveyed here through plates, chronology, and commentary.
