Volume 32 of Iwanami Shoten's 40-volume series The Japanese Photographers (1997–99), which devotes one compact monograph to each major figure from the late Edo period to the present. This volume covers Eikoh Hosoe, whose Ordeal by Roses (with Yukio Mishima) and Kamaitachi (with the butoh dancer Tatsumi Hijikata) built a dramatic world of dense blacks around the themes of the body and dance. With a chronology and critical commentary, it offers an authoritative overview suited both to newcomers and to researchers.
