A collection of portraits by Nao Nakai that began with photographs of her grandmother, who had Alzheimer's disease (Akaaka, 2018; 228×289 mm, 128 pp). Her attempt to capture "existence itself," apart from the meanings others assign to it, gradually extends to plants, animals, landscapes, forests and cities. The world is made of countless connections between individual, nameless presences — the title Shu refers to the complexity of the reverse side of embroidery. A quiet, deeply attentive gaze runs through the volume.
