The catalogue of the exhibition 'The Photographs of Shoji Ueda,' held at the Tokyo Station Gallery in the summer of 1993 and issued by the East Japan Railway Culture Foundation. It gathers some 200 major works, beginning with the Dunes and Children's Calendar series. Placing figures and objects as small accents within the frame against the Tottori sand dunes, the 'Ueda style,' with the clear composition and dry humour peculiar to staged photography, can here be surveyed as a whole. Keeping his footing in his native San'in region and calling himself an 'amateur' all his life while sustaining a wholly distinctive sense of form, Ueda's full picture is deftly conveyed through his representative works. One of the basic catalogues that supported the reappraisal of Ueda which gathered force in the 1990s, it also serves well as an introduction to the appeal of the Dunes series.
