"Sha Shin Magazine vol.9": The Role of Photography When Boundaries Blur
This issue features a major retrospective on photographer Masafumi Sanai, whose 1997 debut photobook "Living" has profoundly influenced Japanese photographic expression. Resonating with artist Taro Okamoto's philosophy that "art today must not be skillful," the magazine explores Sanai's pure sensibility and unadorned gaze. In an unpredictable modern era flooded with excessive information and homogenized images, his work prompts us to re-examine our distance from the world. The featured photographers refuse to be confined by pre-existing forms or values. Instead, they attempt to visualize the "invisible reality" that exists before language, presenting a powerful interplay where past, present, and future collide through the medium of photography.
