Practice is an ongoing series by Kazuhei Kimura, unified by a fixed format in size, design, and page count, all centered around the keyword "practice." The project aims to release one or two volumes annually, eventually totaling ten issues.
As his long-term project Stone and Peach approached its conclusion, Kimura felt a desire for "lightness" in his creative process—a reaction to having confronted a single subject for so many years. He sought to prioritize spontaneity: releasing works into the public eye while the initial impulse is still fresh, and only then reflecting on the work itself. Practice was launched as an irregular series to embrace this experimental and improvisational approach.
The first installment, Cakey Makeup, draws its inspiration from a manual Kimura encountered when he first began learning darkroom printing: "Burning and dodging should only be used as 'secret ingredients.' Avoid 'cakey makeup' that is obvious at first glance."
