The official catalogue of a large solo exhibition Hiroshi Sugimoto held in 2020 to mark the opening of the Higashiyama Cube, the new wing of the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art, published by Heibonsha (229 pages, Japanese and English). Its English title is 'Post Vitam' (after life). Organised around the keywords 'lapis lazuli,' 'Pure Land' and 'polarised colour,' it unfolds Sugimoto's worldview, in which religious, scientific and artistic inquiry intersect from a photographic starting point, through such works as his signature Seascapes, the Sea of Buddha shot at the Sanjusangen-do, and the large-format colour OPTICKS series. Sugimoto himself described the exhibition as 'the act of erecting a virtual temple called the Pure Land of Lapis Lazuli,' and his recent approach of conceiving the exhibition space itself as a single work is clearly evident. With essays by Akiko Miki and Minoru Shimizu and a roundtable with Arata Isozaki and Akira Asada, 'The Axis of Civilisation,' it conveys the summit of Sugimoto's work from the sides of both practice and thought.
