A quiet accumulation of time found within the fragments of daily life.
A record of "ordinary days" captured by Miyako Ishiuchi.
Miyako Ishiuchi is one of Japan's most acclaimed photographers, known for evoking "time" and "memory" through the female body and cherished garments. In her photobook One Days, Ishiuchi intentionally steps away from specific themes or interpretations to weave together the seemingly unremarkable scenes of everyday life.
Published to commemorate her exhibition "Hiroshima / Yokosuka" at the Meguro Museum of Art, this volume differs from the heavy historical contexts of her earlier masterpieces. Instead, it focuses on private, casual snapshots taken over the past few years. From the light filtering into familiar spaces to the arrangement of objects that bear the traces of living, Ishiuchi’s lens scoops up moments that might otherwise seem insignificant, treating them as precious memories. In doing so, she sublimates these fragments of personal days into a universal experience.
From the sharp urban gaze seen in her early works like Yokosuka Story and Apartment, to the profound compassion for life developed in Mother’s and Hiroshima, this book captures the "thickness of time" as seen by Ishiuchi today. It features the essay "Traveler’s Melancholy and Nostalgia" by Shino Kuraishi. One Days is a serene yet powerful volume that reaffirms photography as the intersection of daily life and memory.
