An introductory collection of Nakaji Yasui's work, published in 1994 as a volume in Shinchosha's photography series 'Photo Musee.' Though its format is modest, close to pocket size, it concentrates Yasui's varied output, from the lyricism of Pictorialism to the experiments of the New Photography, Surrealist composition, and a gaze cast toward drifters and townspeople, the work of a man who raced through a brief youth. As the subtitle 'A Genius Who Raced Through Modernism' suggests, it throws light on Yasui's precocious gift, excelling in every idiom while voraciously absorbing the avant-garde of interwar modernism. In an era when substantial large-format catalogues were still few, it did much to carry Yasui's name to a wide readership, and its compactness still makes it easy to recommend as a first step toward him. A fine book, combining approachability with real substance.
