A photo book by Japanese photographer Tokuko Ushioda.
Ushioda entered Kuwasawa Design School in 1960 and graduated in 1963.
There, she studied under photographers Yasuhiro Ishimoto and Kiyoji Otsuji, and also inspired fellow photographers of her generation, such as Shigeo Gocho and Fusako Kodama, friendships that continued even after graduation.
This book is a collection of photographs taken over a five-year period with fellow photographer Shinzo Shimao, whom she met through her mentor Otsuji Seiji and married in 1978, after she had begun her career as a photographer, and their daughter, Maho, whom she had with Shimao. The photographs were taken during a period of 40 years in which the photographs were forgotten, until they were discovered by chance during a move, leading to their publication.
This set consists of two books, one containing the 6x6 (square format) photos from the middle and one containing photos taken on 35mm cameras, and the other containing memories of the busy and lively days spent by the three of them in a room in the Western-style mansion, and the moments when they faced loneliness in the quiet of their room at night.
The period when this work was shot also coincides with the time when Ushioda began working on his first major work, "Refrigerator/ICE BOX," and allows us to trace the direction of her gaze and interests in the early days of her career as a photographer.
At the end of the book is a contribution by photographer Nagashima Yurie, who, like Ushioda, has experienced the circumstances of becoming a mother.
