JP-34 Taiji Matsue

Taiji Matsue's conceptual project "JP" series consists of aerial photographs of prefectures across Japan, with each book titled using its respective ISO3166-2 code. This work, JP-34, focuses on Hiroshima City—including Miyajima, Kure, and Etajima—and stands as a highlight within the series.

The conditions of the earth's surface, meticulously reproduced through high-definition printing, transcend mere landscape photography. They flatly reveal urban structures, geological layers, and even traces of history. As critic Shino Kuraishi notes, "We inadvertently touch the wounds of history from an unexpected distance." Despite its thoroughly objective perspective, this collection is filled with a tranquil energy that prompts deep contemplation from the viewer.
