Inhabiting Light Dialogue on the Edge of the Everyday World Masatake Shinohara / Rinko Kawauchi

This book is composed of a dialogue between text and photography, in which philosopher Masatake Shinohara’s writings are met with photographic "replies" from Rinko Kawauchi, followed by further textual responses from Shinohara. Throughout the writing process, Shinohara noted that he repeatedly returned to Kawauchi’s words: "In photography, what is important is not what you photograph, but how you photograph it."
In the afterword, he writes: "We are experiencing something in reality. When we experience something, it is important to ask how it came to be in this world. (...) As we continued our exchange, I began to think that responding to photography requires directing one’s thoughts toward the place where events occur—that is, toward a dimension like the very source of reality. That dimension lies deep beneath the surface of the everyday world in which our daily lives are conducted."
Within these pages, the various sensations and emotions arising from the photographs are born as words, forming a trail of evolving thought. Through the mutual interplay of text and image, the authors venture into the deepest layers of their shared theme: "Light."
