fw: drawing Yukari Buny
Pickup currently unavailable
This is the first work by artist Yukari Bunya to be published in book form. The volume presents drawings in which perfectly straight lines drawn with a ruler intersect with curves shaped by spontaneous, habitual gestures.
Bunya became fascinated with the appeal of drawing after befriending students in the sculpture department at university. While studying composition as her major, she developed her practice by drawing on the intuitive sense for curves she had acquired in childhood, when she used to imitate the lines of girls’ manga. Building on this foundation, she has forged a distinctive mode of expression by absorbing influences across disciplines—ranging from composition and its surrounding bodies of knowledge to the works and drawings of unconventional architects such as Zaha Hadid, who realized architectural forms once thought impossible through the use of computer technology, and Daniel Libeskind, who turned to architecture after feeling the limits of studying music.
This publication brings together works from Bunya’s early period to her most recent pieces in a substantial volume of 886 pages. All of the works have been subjected to division and trimming processes using machine-learning algorithms, deliberately eliminating human intervention in the editing stage. In contrast, the layout, stencil-based risograph printing, and even the collation and binding processes are intentionally carried out by hand. The distinctive unevenness produced by transfers using single-sided carbon paper is masterfully rendered through skilled craftsmanship. In addition, the booklet cover features original drawings created specifically for this publication by Bunya herself, resulting in an unparalleled printed work in which each copy reveals a unique, improvisational expression.
