Frozen are the Winds of Time Wang Lu
Pickup currently unavailable
The first collection of works by Wang Lu, a photographer born in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, China, and based in Tokyo. This work, which was selected as a finalist for the 47th Ihei Kimura Award, contains a series of photographs woven together while overlapping the memories of her family with her hometown of Taiyuan, which continues to be transformed by rapid urban development.
Wang points her camera at the cityscapes being changed by skyscrapers and elevated roads, and her father and mother living within them. Her father, who suffered a severe brain injury in a traffic accident when she was 12, has continued to live in a different time since the day of the accident. The changing city and the family that seems to be left behind by the flow of time. Centered on that contrast, current photographs, past family photos, and fragments of her mother's diary intersect, quietly bringing to light the layers of memory carved into one family.
All the included works capture traces of disappearing landscapes and memories with a delicate gaze, and while starting from personal experience, they are open to universal themes such as hometown, family, and the nature of time. Includes contributions by photographer Ai Iwane and film director Jia Zhangke. Along with the book design by Satoru Machiguchi, this volume deeply questions the act of photography as a means of preserving memory.
