This book is a compilation of photographs by Japanese photographer Koji Honda, who closely followed the daily life of sake rice farmer ten in Kasai City, Hyogo Prefecture, over the course of a year.
Sake rice farmer ten cultivates Yamada Nishiki, a type of sake rice native to Hyogo Prefecture known as the "king of sake rice." Under the slogan "One Field, One Sake," they collaborate with a sake brewery to produce a single sake from only the rice harvested in a single rice field. While enjoying the benefits of the unique soil and the creatures that inhabit it, they aim to give back to the land and its inhabitants by improving the rice field environment.
This book features photographs by Honda Koji of everything from rice paddy cultivation to harvesting and sake brewing at the brewery, as well as the changing natural scenery around the rice fields through the seasons. It also includes photos of the printing process and the workshop by Kado Hiroshi of Kamizoe, a studio in Nishijin, Kyoto, who created the karakami paper artwork featured on the cover.
It illustrates the abundance that comes from nature and people working hand in hand.
The book design was created by smbetsmb, a design duo consisting of Shinbo Keita and Shinbo Misako.
