Tokyo Whirl Yoichi Yoshinaga

The first collection of works by aerial photographer Yoichi Yoshinaga. It contains 103 works taken from the sky over Tokyo between 2010 and 2025 while flying in Cessnas and helicopters.

Yoshinaga, who has been fascinated by railway photography since his student days and has pioneered a unique expression called "Sora-tetsu" (Aerial Railways). In this book, he repeatedly takes photographs as if circling the city starting from giant terminal stations such as Shibuya, Shinagawa, Tokyo, and Shinjuku, capturing the appearance of Tokyo where railways, the city, and people's activities intersect in complex ways from a bird's-eye view. While the screen depicts the outlines of the city changing moment by moment due to redevelopment, small stories that might be overlooked from the ground, such as people spending time in parks, daily life in residential areas, and the flow of countless people being sucked into stations, are also scattered throughout.

Recording 15 years of Tokyo, which has transformed significantly through the Great East Japan Earthquake and the pandemic, this book is both a document conveying the transition of the city and an attempt to re-examine the landscapes we are used to from a new angle. At the end of the book, a contribution titled "Tokyo Story from a Bird's Eye View" by Norihisa Minagawa, chairman of the Tokyo Suribachi Society, is included. This is a volume that allows one to decipher the origins and charms of the mega-city Tokyo from both aerial and ground perspectives.
