*Available only in Europe
A photobook by Taiji Matsue from his ongoing series that he describes as a "Modern-day Fudoki" (ancient records of culture and geography), featuring aerial photography of Japan's 47 prefectures. This installment focuses on Shimane Prefecture—famous for the Izumo Taisha Shrine, Lake Shinji, and traditional Tatara ironworking. The title "32" refers to the prefecture’s official administrative code.
Following his own rigorous set of rules—shooting with direct frontal lighting to eliminate shadows and excluding the horizon and sky from the frame—Matsue strips away subjective expressions such as light-dark contrasts. What remains is a purely objective vision. Familiar buildings and ordinary landscapes are rendered with a stark freshness, appearing as if seen for the very first time.
