Nobuyoshi Araki’s Sentimental Journey / Winter Journey brings together two distant moments in his life with his wife, Yoko: their honeymoon and, nearly two decades later, the period leading to her death. The 1991 volume combines 21 images from the original Sentimental Journey with 91 photographs from Winter Journey.

The photographs move between intimate moments, hospital visits, domestic interiors, streets, and ordinary scenes of everyday life. By photographing not only significant events but also what happens around them, Araki turns the camera into a record of shared time itself.

Seen alongside Winter Journey, the earlier honeymoon photographs acquire a different weight. Moments once filled with intimacy and uncertainty become inseparable from the knowledge of what follows. The book reveals how photographs change with time, gradually becoming vessels for memory and loss.
