The catalogue of a major retrospective held to mark the centenary of Nakaji Yasui's birth (Yasui was born in 1903), published by Kyodo News in 2004. Touring venues including the Shoto Museum of Art in Shibuya and the Nagoya City Art Museum, the exhibition lived up to its banner, 'all of the photographs,' introducing comprehensively the varied work Yasui left within a short life of thirty-nine years, from the lyricism of Pictorialism to the experiments of the New Photography, Surrealist montage, and documentary that caught drifters and townspeople. Alongside more than 200 plates it carries scholars' essays and a chronology, and it presented in earnest the full picture of a photographer long regarded as 'phantom,' a monumental volume. The reappraisal of Yasui, who stands at the summit of prewar Japanese modernist photography, gathered force with this centenary project as a major turning point. It counts as essential reading for the study of Japanese modern photography.
