A volume published by Kyodo News in 2004 to accompany a major retrospective of Nakaji Yasui (1903-1942), one of the leading photographers of prewar Japan. Doubling as the catalogue for an exhibition that toured venues including the Shoto Museum of Art in Shibuya and the Nagoya City Art Museum, it gathers more than 200 plates across 321 pages. Within a life of only thirty-nine years, Yasui voraciously absorbed the avant-gardes of a fast-changing era, from Pictorialism to the New Photography, Surrealist montage, and a gaze turned toward ordinary townspeople and drifters, leaving outstanding achievements in every idiom, and the book allows the whole of that career to be surveyed. Essays by Yuri Mitsuda and others, together with 'About My Father' by his son Nakao Yasui, richly approach both the man and the work. It is the volume that secured the reappraisal of a photographer long regarded as 'phantom,' and an indispensable reference for the history of Japanese modern photography.
