This volume compiles photographs that Yoshihiko Ueda took over many years of Ushio Amagatsu, the founder and director of the Butoh company Sankai Juku. Against a black background, Amagatsu’s body, entirely coated in white, is depicted in various forms.
The physical presence of Ushio Amagatsu, dancing in the darkness, evokes the form of a Buddhist statue. This collection is an exploration of the latent aesthetic sensibilities directed toward the East Asian physique.
