Tower of silence Momoka Omote
Pickup currently unavailable
In contemporary Japan, where death is increasingly distanced from daily life, emerging photographer Momoka Omote questions the very nature of "mourning and memorializing" (tomurai).
This book is composed of monochrome photographs that capture, with a refined gaze, the chimneys of crematoriums—structures gradually disappearing from the Japanese landscape. These peaceful and somewhat sacred "Towers of Silence," standing in forests or cities, represent the form of death and a landscape of prayer.
Challenging the negative images associated with death, this work features a cover with a soft, ash-inspired texture, along with contributing essays by philosopher Takashi Kurata and cultural anthropologist Maki Kitagawa. It invites the reader to view death as a more intimate and present aspect of existence.
