TERRA Toshio Shibata

A photo book by Japanese photographer Toshio Shibata.

Known for his work using large-format cameras such as 4x5 and 8x10 to capture retaining walls, reservoir dams, and other civil engineering structures on river and mountain banks that have artificially altered natural forms for the purposes of daily life and disaster prevention, Shibata Toshio won the 17th Kimura Ihei Photography Award for his 1992 book "Typical Japan."

His works garnered considerable attention for their geometric compositions and minimalist perspective, eliminating unnecessary elements.

This book is Shibata's second photo book following "Typical Japan."

These photographs capture corners of nature, where artificial straight lines formed by man-made alterations to mountains and rivers coexist with organic lines, highlighting the beauty of their strange and unique forms in monochrome, eliminating color.

The book was compiled by Kyoko Yamagishi, wife of editor Shoji Yamagishi, who has worked hard to promote Japanese photographic expression to the world, including planning the "New Japanese Photography" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
