This photobook is a compilation of works that photographer Mikiya Takimoto created in monochrome after receiving special permission to engage with the Shosoin Repository at Nara's Todai-ji Temple—a National Treasure and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Shosoin has stood solemnly for approximately 1300 years, safeguarding invaluable treasures. Takimoto captured its imposing figure by illuminating it with light cast from the direction of the rising moon in the darkness. This perspective evokes the way people might have quietly looked up at the repository in an age before modern night lighting.
Through the sharp contrast of light and shadow created by the azekura-zukuri (log-cabin style) structure, the book conveys the overwhelming presence of the Shosoin, including the countless pillars and foundation stones that have supported its vast history.
The works are compiled with meticulous tripletone printing and refined design work. It is a brilliant photographic document where history and modern photography intersect.
