Miyako Ishiuchi (born 1947) is one of the world's most highly acclaimed contemporary photographers, notably becoming the first Asian woman to win the prestigious Hasselblad Award in 2014. Since beginning her career at age 28, she has consistently used her mother's maiden name as her artistic signature.
Upon learning about the life of picture book artist Chihiro Iwasaki, Ishiuchi recognized a deep, generational overlap with her own mother, Miyako Fujikura, who was only two years her senior.
This ambitious photobook intertwines the narratives of these two women. It features Ishiuchi’s newly photographed series of Iwasaki’s possessions, 1974. chihiro, alongside her major series documenting her own mother's body and belongings, Mother’s. Incorporating archival photos and materials, this exquisite volume narrates the lives of two women who breathed the air of the same era, viewed through Ishiuchi’s sensitive and powerful lens.
