Landscape, issued by Ryoko Yomiuri Shuppansha in 2008, is a Toshio Shibata photobook from a pivotal moment in his career. Having long photographed engineered terrain in black and white, Shibata shifted decisively toward color around the mid-2000s, and this volume shows how his landscapes were renewed once they acquired hue. The subjects remain consistent—spillway faces of dams, erosion-control barriers, mortared retaining walls, roads threading through mountains—but the addition of subtle color, from concrete gray and moss green to the white of falling water and the brown of exposed earth, gives the images a denser, at once matter-of-fact and sensuous presence. His compositional method persists: horizon and sky are excluded, the subject is faced head-on and flattened, preserving the characteristic tension in which the man-made and the natural contend and merge. Rather than protest or praise, Shibata offers quiet, sustained attention that lets anonymous civil engineering register as "landscape."
