Published as the sixth installment of a series that pits Japanese literature and photography against each other within a single volume, this work ensures that the novel does not explain the photographs, nor do the photographs serve as illustrations for the novel.

The text of Sushi, a novel published by Kanoko Okamoto in 1939, intersects with the works of up-and-coming photographer Ayaka Endo. The raw, "enduring presence" residing in Okamoto's words meets the "presence of photography" emerging from Endo's images, which blur the boundaries between nature and artifice. As these two forms of expression run parallel and resonate with one another, familiar narratives begin to read differently, and perceived images transform into entirely new impressions.
