USSR 1991 is a monumental photo book by Keizo Kitajima, capturing 15 republics of the Soviet Union over a 150-day period just before its historic collapse. This new edition stands as a vital record in the history of photography, documenting a massive geopolitical shift through the photographer’s uniquely uncompromising gaze.
This new edition features 95 vivid color photographs captured on Kodachrome, accompanied by 57 monochrome images documenting cities across Eastern Europe. Long awaited since their original partial publication in Asahi Graph magazine, these works are finally presented here in their comprehensive entirety. Accompanied by Kitajima’s own newly written essay, "Reminiscence," and a thoughtful contribution by Shino Kuraishi, this volume articulates the profound significance of the images. It is a profound work that clearly reflects the "individuals" and "differences" present at the moment history began to shift.
