The Another Side of Ikko Narahara:
The 1950s Tokyo and Yokohama Captured in His "Personal Documents" — Now Reborn with Previously Unpublished Works.
Ikko Narahara stands as one of the most prominent figures in post-war Japanese photography. Around the same time he was shaking the photography world with his masterpieces Human Land (1956) and Domains (1958), he was also developing a distinctly different, more intimate style that he referred to as his "Personal Documents."
This new publication, Tokyo, the '50s / Blue Yokohama, is a special edition that expands upon the acclaimed 1996 book Tokyo, the '50s by adding over 40 previously unpublished photographs from the series Blue Yokohama.
In contrast to the meticulously composed style of his most famous works, these snapshots were born from spontaneous encounters as he wandered through the city streets. The light and atmosphere of the 1950s—a period when Japan was on the brink of rapid economic growth—are carved into these frames with a free and effortless camerawork. Featuring a newly written commentary by renowned photography critic Kotaro Iizawa, this definitive volume unveils a fresh, unseen side of the legendary photographer.
